"As a leader, it's a major responsibility on your shoulders to practice the behavior you want others to follow." — Himanshu Bhatia

One of Tom Deierlein's 11 enduring leadership principles, "Set the Example," is listed in his book on leadership in the US Army. According to this rule, a leader must set a good example for their team by modeling the attitudes and conduct that they desire from them. [1]

Setting a good example is important because it builds credibility and trust among team members. Team members are considerably more likely to trust and appreciate a leader when their words and actions are consistent. This is especially significant in a military setting, because maintaining discipline and teamwork in the face of difficulty depends on mutual trust and respect.

Setting a good example has the additional benefit of inspiring and motivating the rest of the team. It might be beneficial to the team's unity and sense of purpose to witness the leader putting in extra effort and making sacrifices for the group. This is particularly crucial when team members are dealing with trying or demanding conditions. But it's crucial to remember that leading by example involves more than just words and deeds—it also involves a leader's thinking.

A leader should be humble, open to admitting their errors, and eager to learn new things. They should be prepared to take responsibility for their actions and put their team's needs above their own.

A key leadership principle is setting an example. It promotes trust and credibility among team members, inspires and drives them, and fosters a sense of shared purpose. A leader who leads by example is appreciated by their team and often imitated. This idea applies to all leadership positions in all industries, not just those in the military.

Hi, thanks for dropping by!

I am a cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy Masidtalak Class of 2023. I am also a member of the Alfa Company and the First Battalion Investigation Officer. Just like everybody else, I used to be a civilian who dreamed of becoming a part of the long maroon line.
